Whenever the spirituality of the Society of Jesus is mentioned, one thinks immediately of the Spiritual Exercises. The Constitutions of the Society tend to come less readily to mind in this context; we are inclined to look upon them primarily as a law book, having little to do, directly, with the spiritual life. But as a matter of fact (as Fr. de Jaer makes clear in this book), the Constitutions are a spiritual volume meriting as much attention as the Exercises, for unlike the Exercises (which are designed for both Jesuits and others) the Constitutions propose and describe that way of proceeding toward God which is uniquely the way of the Society of Jesus: "our way of proceeding," as a lapidary Jesuit phrase puts it.
