St. Ignatius recognized that many people could profit from an experience of some parts of the full thirty-day Spiritual Exercises, but by reason of temperament, education, or ability would not be candidates for the entire thirty-day retreat. On the other hand, there are people who, although they have all the necessary talent, ability, etc., to profit from the full thirty-day Exercises, simply could not afford to take a month off from their regular work and other commitments in order to do so. And so in the "Introductory Explanations" (or "Annotations") to the Exercises he makes provision for a director to assist retreatants such as these in making their way through the  Exercises.

Fr. Tetlow's manual is designed as a help for such a director. For preparation days prior to the Exercises themselves, and then for each of the four weeks of the Exercises, he provides practical advice for conducting conferences with retreatants, scriptural passages that can be suggested to retreatants for prayer, and so on. Left-hand pages of the book are intended for the director only (not the retreatant); however, the director can, if he wishes, photocopy the right-hand pages (which pertain to the retreatant rather than to the director) and give them to that retreatant.

Chapter seven of the book gives a series of notes for the director, drawn from Fr. Tetlow's own experience as a director. Finally, an eighth chapter takes up Ignatius's observation that, for some individuals, the material of the Exercises themselves might be beyond their grasp, in which case a series of "light works" might be assigned for their prayer and spiritual growth. This chapter, new in the revised edition, is appropriately entitled "Lightworks." For those who purchased the earlier edition of Choosing Christ in the World, "Lightworks" is available as a separate item, capable of being bound in the books they already have. The cost of "Lightworks" by itself is $6.25.
