Jesuit Religious Life

$16.75

Jesuit Religious Life continues the publication in English of Antonio de Aldama's great series of exegetical works on Saint Ignatius of Loyola's Constitutions of the Society of Jesus. It deals with the sixth part of the Constitutions, the principal expression of Ignatius's understanding of the interior religious life of Jesuits. Aldama's purpose in all his commentaries is straightforward: to discover what Ignatius meant to say in the Constitutions. He analyzes words and expressions, compares parallel passages, delves into Ignatius's past experience to shed light on his thought. He also carefully studies the genesis of the text, tracing it from its first draft down to the definitive form and going upstream to the sources from which Ignatius, or his collaborator and secretary, Juan de Polanco, might have taken their ideas.

Aldama's exceptional knowledge of the manuscript material and of the Constitutions themselves in their genesis and as a whole eminently equips him for his task. A shrewd detective in all that concerns the textual intricacies of the Constitutions, he is regularly able to clarify obscurities and ambiguities in this fundamental text.
